Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) is a veterinary university founded in 1989 in Madhavaram Milk Colony, Chennai, India. It is composed of the Veterinary College and Research Institutes, UVTRCs, FTCs, clinics to serve the farming communities and educate the students to become an great scientist.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare , Government of India. Formerly known as Imperial Council of Agricultural Research, it was established on 16 July 1929 as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 in pursuance of the report of the Royal Commission on Agriculture. The ICAR has its headquarters at New Delhi. The Council is the apex body for co-ordinating, guiding and managing research and education in agriculture including horticulture, fisheries and animal sciences in the entire country. With 101 ICAR institutes and 71 agricultural universities spread across the country this is one of the largest national agricultural systems in the world.
ICAR - Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Namakkal is a peripheral unit of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai with funding of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi functioning since 13.10.2004. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Namakkal, a centre for transfer of technologies from lab to various groups like Farming Community, Self Help Groups, Rural Youths, Extension Personnel etc., through organizing various events like Trainings, On Farm Testing, Front Line Demonstrations and Advisory services regularly.
To impart the scientific skills and knowledge among the farm women, farmers & physically challenged people and to adopt the scientific technologies in their farms, KVK has conducted various training programmes, awareness campaigns, exhibitions, demonstrations, field days and camps in the following the subjects as follows:
The mandate of KVK is Technology Assessment and Demonstration for its Application and Capacity Development.
From April 2019 to March 2020, 171 training programmes were conducted and 5573 farmers were benefitted. Livestock rearing units, Vermicompost unit, Azolla unit, Honey bee unit, Shadenet nursery production unit, Coconut sapling unit, Bio control agents production unit, Mushroom shed are developed and maintained in KVK for the benefit of farming community. Also KVK Namakkal has conducted 200 hrs training programme for Organic grower and Soil and Water Testing Lab Assistant.
Soil and Water Testing Laboratory is in operation since September 2011. In the last 5 years 5052 soil health cards and 534 water health cards were issued to farmers of Namakkal district. To improve the production of minor millets and its value addition, machineries were distributed to five KVK group farmers. In addition other district farmers also being benefitted by this KVK.
